My honeymoon further established the fact that I’m officially a nose-in-the air beer snob. I couldn’t for the life of me manage to finish a while Red Stripe, or a Carib either. I think I drank maybe a few sips here and there, but the stuff just couldn’t fit the bill. Maybe it was the smell which threw me, but it just wasn’t happening. I think the only real beer I had, and had to buy, was a Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. It was ok. I guess. Also, I could go a long time without ever hearing a reggae song or “hey mon” again.
So what did I drink? Cranberry and vodkas and white russians (the Dude abides). Although our resort was all-inclusive, the thought of drinking hard liquor all-day long didn’t fit my fancy so I stuck to most drinking with dinner. All-inclusives would be a hell of a lot better with a microbrew selection. Overall, the honeymoon was great…we ate a lot and laid on the beach for most days. There was even an Au Natural Beach….but there isn’t enough vodka in the world to get me onto that hanging flesh-filled plot of sand.
I seriously miss a good beer. Thankfully, I got some nice beer related gifts for the wedding. Ashley’s brother brought be a bunch of mis-pours and mis-labels from Wachusett Brewery including their new batch of Monsta Ale and Larry (an excellent IIPA). My friend Steve from CO brought me some Oskar Blues and my buddy Mike brought me some Surly. We haven’t opened any gifts yet, but I’m hoping some beer might be in there as well.
The two kegs of New Albanian Brewing Company’s Elector and Beaks were a hit at the reception and blew pretty damn fast much to my surprise. So special thanks to those guys in New Albany, IN for the hookup there.
Now with the wedding under my belt, summer approaching, that means two important things: races and beer festivals! First up is the Fest of Ale on June 4th!!
It’s good to be home! Cheers!
Now on to write some long overdue beer reviews…

Drink rum mon! Jamaica and the other Caribbean nations are not known for beer but the rums are amazing.
If you need good brew in the Caribbean look for St John Brewers. Good brews created by some island hop heads and produced by Shipyard Brewing. Their IPA and Belgian style wheat beers are pretty good.
I havent had rum since college and I still stand by that oath.
If you are like me that rum from college wasn’t the best stuff. The last time I was in the Caribbean I got my hands on some great aged rum that was as good as some of the small batch Bourbons and Single Malt Scotch Whiskys that I’ve had (and I’ve had a lot). Sipping rum not “Capt. & Coke” rum.
Maybe your oath is worth reconsidering?
3 things
1) a week with nothing but cheap beer will CERTAINLY make you appreciate good beer
2) talking about the nude beach made me think of the nude beach scene in Eurotrip, a vastly under-appreciated college humor movie
3) i’ve heard nothing but good things about Larry. I’ll gladly share a Odell Myrcenary (their new IIPA and top-notch as well) with you if you share a Larry with me. Sharing a Larry, that sounds funny.
or I can give you one…I think I have 7 or 8.
Or that too. And I can give you a Myrcenary in return.
